Can Main Gallery Page use different template than album.tpl

I was wondering if it's possible to have the main gallery page use a different (new) template than the album.tpl.

I would like to have the main gallery page be more like a home page to include some text and other info above the album highlights.

I can't add it to the album.tpl because then it will show up on every album page as well.

Is there some kind of "if then" code that can go on the album.tpl to have it know whether or not your on the main gallery page or not and display this new info if you are?

any ideas?
