Just "out of the blue", when I put my memory card in my camera, I got this message flashing in the little "window" ..."FOR". I had no reason to re-format, but I tried anyway. It wouldn't format, and just kept giving me this "FOR" message, and I can't take any pictures, obviously. I tried another memory card and it did the same thing. Nikon wants me to send the camera in, but I don't want to give up just yet. I'm hoping someone has experienced this problem and can tell me what the problem is. The camera has given me absolutely no trouble in the year and a half that I've had it...this just happened all of a sudden. Also, when I put my memory card in my card reader, what shows up on the computer screen where it normally identifies my G drive, which is the card reader, is a weird jumble of numbers and letters. This is very frustrating...can anyone help me? Thanks!

Strange issue... At first glance it appears like you put the cards in and the camera started formatting each one without being told.
I have a few questions. You don't have to reply necessarily but hopefully they can give you some starting point towards a resolution.
You stated that you tried to format the cards yourself after receiving the FOR message:
* If you are able to try to format the cards then does that mean that it flashes FOR but then stops?
* How long does it flash?
* Is the green light for the card on while it is flashing?
* Once it stops what does it display in the window?
* Once it stops is the camera able to function at all - AF, meter, etc?
* What happens when you push the shutter? (sounds, lights, sensations?)
* What is your camera's firmware revision?
* Did Nikon have you reset the camera? If not, you might try that...
TO RESET:
Remove all accessories from the camera.
Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
By pressing the button on the bottom of the camera, the D70 will be reset to "out of the box" condition. Please note that the system clock will need to be set and any custom curves that have been loaded will be erased.
IMPORTANT:
It is advised to perform the full reset only on the direct instruction of a Nikon support staffer. A less intrusive two button reset can be accomplished by holding the BKT button and the metering mode button simultaneously for two seconds. Please refer to page 111 of the D70 manual, which outlines which settings are restored to factory default as a result of the two button reset. Custom settings are not affected by the two button method.
* One last thing that, if it was my camera, I'd do... Go to the local camera store and:
1> Try your cards in a new ("known good") D70. Do you get the same problem?
2> Try one of their cards in your D70. Do you get the same problem?
That will let you get it down to either card or camera. If it is the camera I'd then try your camera with their card and their battery just to make sure it isn't an issue with a recalled battery. (Did you make sure you battery isn't a recall?)

Whew!! I hope that wasn't too much. Can you tell I do Tech Support for a living??
If none of this helps you or you just need more info to go on you might check out http://Nikonians.org and http://dpreview.com (Extensive Nikon and Nikon D70 user groups). Someone there may have run into this.
Good Luck!

Hey Reba, what did you do to fix that problem exactly? I'm having the same problem. I took about 300 pictures and now I cannot download the pictures, It's giving that "for" message and if I format the card I'll lose all of it. What should I do? PLEASE HELP ME, rsrsrs. Tks.

I have had this same format problem. I just took the card out and in again , and so far it seems ok again. But in the meantime I have another problem.
When i turn off the camera it does not respond. So it is on all the time unless i take the battery out. Any suggestion?
Thanks
