Photo albums of existing photo directories?

From scanning the documentation, I gather that when there are existing photo directories (file folders) on a website, these can be identified as *sources* for gallery albums, but when these albums are created, the pictures are copied from the source directories to Gallery's own directories. This is not what I need.

What I want is for gallery software to create albums of existing photo directories (file folders) on my website, *but to leave these photo directories in place*. In other words I want gallery to be the photo management layer between my photo directories and my users.

Put another way, I would like to be able to specify an album's picture directory (file folder path), and then give that album a name, and have the software scan the directory for existing photos (and occasionally do it again after that if photos are sometimes uploaded directly through ftp, or with other software), and integrate found photos into the database lists for the albums.

I have a community website with thousands of pictures (organized by departmentfolder/photosfolder - a couple of dozen departments) integrated into hundreds of web pages, and I need a way to manage these pictures, while leaving them in place.

Is this possible with Gallery?

Thanks,

- Henrik

you can use symlinks when adding items from server. Look for a checkbox at the bottom of the add items confirmation page.
