best way to have galleries not visible/accessible to each other?

Can I do this without a multisite? Would simply disabling the top-level menu do the trick? Is there a more simple/direct way?

You could use groups, and assign different groups to each sub-album. If the group has view perms on only ONE album, I think it should only *see* that one album.

So a user in group1 would see album1, a user in group2 would see album2 and so on. Assuming you setup perms that way of course.
