Used Pre-installer; only have one theme to choose from (Matrix). Help?

I expect I'm missing something very obvious. I have used Gallery 1 for two years - just need to be pointed in the right direction here, as I was unable to find any posts related to my dilemma, I expect it's a rather stupid problem.
