NetPBM - pnmcomp

I've been looking at the posts and there are many about the missing pnmcomp in the Solaris package on the gallery sf.net site, but I couldn't find anything detailing how to get around this when it comes to configuring during setup. Can someone explain to me how it is possible? I've only been trying to set it up since last night, hence my noviceness!

Gallery URL (optional but very useful): None, yet
Gallery version: 1.5.3
Apache version: 1.3.31 (Unix)
PHP version (don't just say PHP 4, please): 4.3.7
