Hi, only when I'm logged in as me (administrator) but I've clicked the link for "Guest" display mode, there's a "Make Highlight" option below each album highlight thumbnail on the main page. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks much.
the guest mode is not exact. it's just a preview. if you really want to see what the guest user sees, logout.

I see this 'Make Highlight' option doesn't exist when I log out. So this option never really appears in a real live situation?
It seems to gives you the option to make an album highlight the highlight of your top-level album, and I'm not even sure what that would mean. (I'd try it out but I wouldn't know how to undo it!)

the make highlight action allows you to change the thumbnail that is shown for a specific album. the thumbnail of an album is called a highlight because it is the one thumbnail of all possible thumbnails of the images in this album that should represent all of them. it's a highlight.
i guess there's a similar definition of that term somewhere in the codex.

Thanks, Valiant -- that's what I'm confused about: the 'Make Highlight' option that appears below each album on my main page doesn't allow me to change the thumbnail for that album, but only for the main page album that it sits on; that is, its parent. For instance, my top-level ('main page') album is called Rick's Photo Gallery. If I click on Make Highlight that appears below my 'Garden in the Woods Album' it takes me to a page where I can change the highlight for album "Rick's Photo Gallery"! And this is confirmed by the wording: "You can make this item the thumbnail for its parent or any ancestor album" -- seemingly not for the current album!

the make highlight view has two features:
1. make the selected thumbnail the highlight of its direct parent album
2. make the selected thumbnail the highlight of any of its indirect parents (all ancestors).
you can make it the highlight only for those albums, for which the currently logged user has "edit item" permissions.

OK, it finally hit me that the 'Make Highlight' option that you see in Guest mode is simply a one-option contraction of the full <<album actions>> drop-down that displays when you're in administrative mode.
I think I've just never set a highlight for my top-level album (my main Gallery page), so I don't know what it would look like. I'd experiment with doing so but how would I remove a highlight for a main page if I decided I didn't want it? Where does it display on your main page?
Thanks much for all your help -- it's a real pleasure exploring all the features of this fantastic piece of software.
