"Thumbnail ratio: as the original image" doesn't work

Gallery version:1.5.3
PHP version:4.4.2
Graphics Toolkit:ImageMagic
Operating system:SunOS 5.10
Web browser/version: IE 6 Sp2

Even though I set "Thumbnail ratio: as the original image" in configuration, I get distored squared thumbs after uploading. I have to edit thumbnail to get the ratio of original image.

Is there a way to fix this right from uploading in the first place?

FAQ: I changed a value on Step 3 of the configuration wizard (or in config.php), but the change isn't taking effect. What's going on?

Now I upgraded the Gallery to version 2, it works much better Jens:-)
