Hello. The other day I tried installing gallery from the automatic CVS .tar.gz files that are available. I didn't have luck with those, so today I tried getting the latest files out of CVS. Everything worked fine.

Gallery 2 looks very promising and I would like to thank bharat for creating it (and the original gallery). As soon as I get around to it, I am going to donate some money to this project. I have made much use of the original gallery (I have over 5000 images).

Anyway, for those of you reading this forum that don't have the ability to set up a test gallery 2, you can check out mine. Go here: <!-- BBCode Start --><A HREF="http://g2.andrewhitchcock.org" TARGET="_blank">http://g2.andrewhitchcock.org</A><!-- BBCode End -->. Also, I could probably set up accounts for people that want to play with the new admin controls and image settings menu.

Thanks again,
Andrew

Hey cool! It's neat to see an actual G2 install with real data in it. Don't get too attached to the data, though because the underlying structure is sure to change a few more times in ways that will be minor but will screw up what you already have. Sorry bout that.

Do you notice it being any faster ? Gallery 1.3.x is nice, but I'm hoping the mysql will greatly enhance the speed for very large galleries.

Oh yeah, I'm aware that the data formats are constantly changing, but I wanted to see an album with stuff besides the random pictures that the test loads. Plus, this isn't my main gallery, I am not going to input thousands of pictures until the data formats are stable.

I haven't noticed it to be much faster, but that is because my test gallery is small. However, it is slower/faster in different areas. I am not sure, but it seems to generate thumbnails and resized images as you view them. So, adding pictures is faster, but the initial viewing of them is slightly slower. My 1.3 gallery takes a long time to load the last pages of 1000+ image gallery, hopefully that is fixed (in 2.0).

Yes I try 1.3.1 before and it becomes very very slow when I loaded 20000+ photos.

I am one of the user waiting for G2.

we've got 25,820 photos in our gallery (1.3.4 something from cvs) and it runs plenty fast for us.

Heya

I'm running 1.3.3. on PIII 450, 512RAM, FreeBSD 5.0, Apache 1.x, PHP 4.x.x (latest).
222 albums, 23574 photos on 37 pages (500-1000 new images every week).

It gets slow when I have a lot of users browsing. Search takes 30% of cpu (for 30 seconds), opening an album takes like 8-10%.

Will the new gallery take less of my cpu time, because seeing it go to load average 8.00+ makes me a bit scared. The new apache web server (2.0) might help, but I don't like the idea of testing g2 on apache 2.x since it might crash a lot. Is it stable enough to run it yet?

MySQL will help tremendously, especially for searching.

Apache 2.x is the stable branch for Apache. Just make sure you have PHP 4.3.x (current stable is PHP 4.3.1). The only reason people aren't flocking to Apache 2 is that all modules have to be re-written, and many cool modules aren't available for Apache 2 [yet]. However, stability is not really an issue -- it's stable. However, just so you know, Apache 2 will not speed up Gallery...

However, G2 is not stable. Don't use it for anything important, the database structure, etc.. isn't solid and you'll probably end up loosing all your data if you try to upgrade when it becomes stable...

Make sure the username/password you provided Gallery for mySQL is correct...
