Permalinks

This is perhaps a very basic question, but, how does one get permalinks to work? Say you install an album called, 'talent' and that is the folder name in which the album will be installed. And then, by default, Gallery2 sets 'talent' also as a permalink. Now, for example, say Gallery2 is installed in the subdomain 'gallery.mydomain.com'. I would think that someone would (should) be able to directly access this [/b] 'talent' album by typing: gallery.mydomain.com/talent. But, that don't seem to work.

I imagine I am missing something very basic here, but can not define it. Can someone help with a suggestion? Thanks.
