Error while upgrading Gallery Core Module

Hi, hope you can help.
I have been using a version of Gallery which was working fine, and when I visited my site url recently, I was asked to upgrade to Gallery 2 for some reason. After following the steps, I received this error:

An error occurred while upgrading Gallery Core Module
Something went wrong when we tried to upgrade the core module. In the boxes below you can find some debug information. Report this in the Gallery Forums and we'll help you diagnose the problem.

Error (ERROR_BAD_PLUGIN) : Unknown module version <html>
in modules/core/CoreModuleExtras.inc at line 1230 (CoreModule::error)
in modules/core/module.inc at line 490 (CoreModule::upgrade)
in modules/core/classes/GalleryModule.class at line 158 (CoreModule::upgrade)
in upgrade/steps/UpgradeCoreModuleStep.class at line 79 (CoreModule::installOrUpgrade)
in upgrade/index.php at line 184 (UpgradeCoreModuleStep::processRequest)

Can anyone help, or is there a way that I can avoid needing to upgrade as I was quite happy before?

Gallery does not spontaneously upgrade. Something has occurred to cause the upgrade.
I suspect that you are missing a versions.dat file in the g2data directory.
Backup?

Hi Dave, no I don't delete my versions.dat and/or g2data directory...

What is the content of versions.dat?
