wp2g2 integration

Geez, I don't understand why I cannot get this things installed.

Whenever URL Rewrites in Gallery2 is inactive, I can activate the plugin. At this point, nothing is written to the .htaccess file within the wordpress directory. Also, I am unable to use wp-gallery2.php. Cannot find server is displayed in browser.

If I activate URL rewrites in Gallery2, everything fails. I am unable to even view the integration page within the wordpress control panel. Is this because the .htaccess is not written to?

HELP!!
