This topic is a for users who have installed Gallery 1.6-alpha1, or 1.6-alpha2 and want to give feedback in any way (except bug reports)
General troubleshooting questions do NOT go in this thread, and will be moved or deleted without asking or warning.
We made a separate topic for bug reports and list of known/fixed issues in alpha 2.

See here what bugs were fixed till alpha1.

Fixed Version are available via SVN or separately from Jens' archive.

After I posted a comment on the front page I was directed to give some input on the Alpha relase.
My biggest dissapointment was the css-layout. And that is divided into two points:
1. The files system within the css folder. This really old system, not for everyone who is starting out with css to really understand. I would really like a system like this:
-setup.css -> only for the pages that install gallery. (I use the config.php to alter what I need, but that is me).
-album.css -> maybe layout for the albums with the ability to create css for each album like portfolio.album.css
-frontpage.css -> This one is easy. Let users create their front page more easily, but progress in made by using more <divs>

Of course each user can setup this up from the start on and editing their own stuff. But it's way more easy if its built like this from the start.

The second is the css-layout and design. I mentioned web 2.0 and was asked to elaborate a bit about it. But really I cant elaborate to much about it since I'm not a designer or anything but I have bookmarked http://www.good-tutorials.com/ and there is always reference to web 2.0. And I really miss a new clean basic skin wich incorporate "web 2.0" more to the G1 series. Thus making it look more modern Gallery innstall then the first G1.0 that rolled out.
Hopefully the rewamp of the css-system lets me design my own template easier then the earlier releases.
I havent tampered enough with the alpha relase to really tell if it's easier. Only time can tell.

Some links to web 2.0 layouts:

http://www.flash-game-design.com/tutorials/gallery-layout-photoshop-tutorial-3.html
http://www.pssimply.com/photoshop/10/full-grey-web-layout.html

Now, Im not saying this can be done with G1, but one cannot expect the average user to create such layout and design. And Im not saying the links I pasted is pretty or the best, I just found some links for example purposes only.

Few more things as I try out the new release.
-Missing option for popup window for image when fullsize. (Maybe I missed in the advanced setup?)
-Feature photo for front page (Missed this as well?)
-Sorting. After 1.5.3 I never got my pictures or albums correctly sorted by picture taken date. Or is it my camera or my server that suddenly have the date screwed up?
-album properties: margin/padding for the thumbs. I really miss this option. I can set the border/background/links colors, but not the space between them? This is really a feature frequently requested as well in the forums.

Okay, I really find the advanced setup a bit messy, but thats why you have the easy one I guess.

And to a feature I really liked. The ability to add a server path instead of learing users to remember this. Cause they never do. And thus renders ftp access really useless. But this can really help a lot of my users.

Now, before you wonder why I dont use G2, I dont have the power to use it like it should. And second I really dont like it at all. But maybe in the future when I have more computer power and G2 goes to a new level.

I have a suggestion. Stop updating Gallery 1 like the site says will supposedly happen 'one day'. It's a waste of time and resources to keep updating software that will supposedly not be supported soon anyway. It would be better to use the time and resources to make better updates to Gallery 2.

Hello!

Wow, nice design. I much like the look of it.

But pray someone tell me: There used to be a header.html in html_wrap where I stuck a link back to my homepage. Where do I put that now?

Thanks for good work,

Georg

gallery/templates/clasic/gallery.header.tpl.default and save as gallery.header.tpl
That is if you are using the clasic template

I am very happy and thankful there are people out there still updating and interested in Gallery 1. I'm not a coder and the php and the way Gallery 1 is built is easier for me to understand to make minor mods to it. Gallery 2 is, I believe, still a bit above me :) Sure, if Gallery 1 were to go away completely I'd have to force myself to learn the layout and "guts" of Gallery 2 but at the moment, Gallery 1 suits my needs just fine and is easier for the "hack coders" to modify... in my opinion. So, I personally am thankful to Jens for continuing on with the Gallery 1 project for as long as possible. Thanks!

I have to agree with Zman, I've struggled with G2 and at present prefer G1 and am also greatful for the continued development and support for it.... keep it going guys... and being a layman I found the current install easy... so easy in fact I wondered what I had done wrong!!!!
Thanks Guys... :-)

Regards Steve

Why not go ahead and make the move to G2 anyway? After the final G1 release (supposedly 1.7) they "will continue to fix major bugs and put out security updates for a year following the last feature release." That means, eventually there will be no updates at all for G1, and you will be stuck using the old software.

Some hosts don't have DBs. So those users can't move to G2.
Others don't like the speed of G2 ( it is being worked on BTW )
This list is long but you get the picture.

Just because they don't make MGs anymore does not stop them from being driven.
This debate will be much like the Serious Safe Mode Discussion so lets not flog a dead horse and let Tim_j do the developing he wants as long as he wants to.
Some people appreciate his work.
I do.

hi Jens,

keep up the good work, I really appreciate your dedication to G1!

I'm going to have a look at 1.6 now and - oh yes! - I'm really looking forward to the announced group feature.

thanks,

We use to be able to put <meta http-equiv="refresh"content="5;url=http://bla.bla_bla.com/"> in the album summary to redirect to other pages/sites.
Now the tags are stripped.
This might be a security issue or is the stripping of tags very aggressive?

G2: link item module.

I don't know if you've already taking postnuke 0.8 in account, the third milestone release has been released today, the next version should be a release candidate.
If you do : i've just tested alpha 3 in postnuke 0.8 and it didn't detect that it should be embedded because the leading underscore from the defines _PN_VERSION_ID and _PN_VERSION_NUM has been removed.
There was another error that prevented it working in pn0.8 but that's a postnuke bug.

Hello Tycho,

thanks for this info. I will fix this for Gallery 1.6 and 1.5.6

Edit: Done in 1.6-RC1-svn-b25 and 1.5.6-svn-b12

Been using v1.6-RC1-svn-b56 for a couple of days and love it so far. A couple of things I'd like to see...

When I installed 1.5 from the box of tools my web host provided it didn't take me long to search these forums for "how to exclude admins from being counted". I found the code and modified the file, but it would be nice if that were an option. And if you could have a checkbox for users/groups that says "Don't count this user's visits" that would be awesome. I like to log in as a normal user and poke around to see what the page would look like to the rest of the world, but I don't like my experimenting and uploading to skew the counters.

Is it possible to put the albumname in the Properties screen along with tile and description? Every time I make an album I change all three of those things. It would be nice to do it all in once place.

Thanks for all the work you do. I've cranked out a couple of Perl scrips for work and know the work you must be putting into this.

Hello Ox,

there would be two possibilities.
Either as global setting, or per album.

_i_ would prefer to do this as a global setting. As its easier to maintain and does not blow the albumdata.

What would _you_ prefer ?

I think a global option is best, at least for me. I don't think there's much of a reason to have it on a per-album basis.

Dave

Can one just rename the old wrapper.header.default, or is a complete redo necessary?

Also, how 'bout footers?

Complete redo.

The files are not compatible.
