Mirror/load balancing/remote storage -module?

I wanted to start making a module such as described in subject.
Please give me a shout if someone already has started and maybe want help or has a almost finished module or so...

As far as I know nobody is working on this.
It won't be easy, but you are more than welcome to do it :)

If you need some help just join us at #gallery, someone will help you out for sure! :)

there's a related module: coralize. see documentation -> user contributions.
it doesn't balance the load for html requests, but offloads the image download requests.

the module needs to be upgraded to work with g2.1. it won't work with url rewrite on right now.

Offloading the image processing to a second server would be brilliant
