My problem:

As explained in the very long and drawn out thread seen here ( http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=5425&48 ). I had a good working gallery and now it isn't. If you want to read the whole story check out the link above. Otherwise in a nut shell. I have had tons of help from Joan and Andrew, and have gone as far as removing every aspect of gallery from the server and reloading it, only to get the same error over and over. The thing is the gallery works fine if the file size is about 350kb or less, yet it is setup to work up to 2mb. I had no issues uploading my 850kb photos for 6 months, now I do.

Here is the error as just recorded from the brand new install I just completed.

Since I removed the old gallery you will only see a single album with a single photo that it allowed to upload. If you would like to play around to test it you can use the user/pass of test/test.

I have so many photos, I can't reduce them all to make it work, I need it to work as it did before and upload the original images.

I also have a gallery installed on a website for a client @ http://www.getdownproductions.com/gallery/ . They use the same host as myself and it works fine. No issues and it will upload any file that I try to upload to my own gallery.

I appreciate any help that may be offered
if you need to e-mail me my address is

Thank you, Thomas

Just a follow up note. I installed gallery on another domain of mine ( http://www.tadesigns.com/fd/gallery ) tonight and it works fine. It uploads the same pictures I'm having trouble with on my original gallery. It is also hosted by the same host as the others.

Thanks,
Tom

:( Man, that's quite weird. Is there any difference in the config.php file between the two (other than obvious things like URL and album directory, etc..)? Is the tmp directory different? I don't know -- long shot...

Andrew,

I recieved this message back from my host. Does this make sense? and can you offer some more direction?

<snip>

Hello Thomas

PHP uses the disk space for the 'thomasanastasia' email account when running php scripts.

It appears that your php scripts create session variables which take up disk space for the 'thomasanastasia' email account.

We have placed all those php sessions in the /home/thomasanastasia/www/sessions directory. Please change the sessions directory for your php scripts in the php.ini file.

You can then login through FTP, and delete all the unnecessary session variables so that you can free up more space for the 'thomasanastasia' account, and then your php scripts will work.

Your host might be confused here. It has nothing to do with email, and session data is usually stored under the web user's account, not yours. This is especially true since your host is running Apache 1.3.19, which can't run as different users for different virtual hosts (Apache 2.x can). You could try freeing up some disk space, as your host vaguely suggested, and see if it helps, but I'd be surprised if it did.

After I hadposted here last night i sent them another message asking them the following:

So
>would
>these session file be like temp files that could be deleted without
>any
>harm? When I go through the configuration process I designate the temp
>file
>at /tmp .

This is the response:

Hello,

You should set the session path (or temp file) as /home/thomasanastasia/www/sessions, as putting them in /tmp will use up your e-mail account quota (only 10 megabytes).

These session files can or cannot be deleted; depending on the type of program you are using. From the looks of it, these files are not supposed to be deleted (however, you would need to contact the vendor of the script to be sure). However, setting the path to /home/thomasanastasia/www/sessions instead of /tmp will use space on your hosting account quota (which it should) and not your e-mail quota.

Thank You.

Does this still soundlike its setup the way you described. I'm sorry, but my knowledge of php is minimal at best.

Thanks,
Tom

If your host wants you to put your sessions files in /home/thomasanastasia/www/sessions, just go ahead and do so. :D I cant really see why putting them in /tmp would impede on your email quota, but just change the path in the config wizard.

Just make sure that the needed permissions are set, and you should be ready to go.
chmod 777 /home/thomasanastasia/www/sessions should do the trick.

Wow!!! I actually uploaded a file that was 850kb'. Its been more than a month since that has happened. So I guess this might have been the fix, but I will hold all judgement until I start getting more up and see that it wasn't a fluke.

So my next question would be. arethe files it creates in the sessions folder basiaclly a temp file? Can they be deleted?

They can be deleted, and if you're using Gallery 1.3.3, they should be deleted and not left there like that.

ok, it seems my host was correct. i was able to upload about 215 pictures before i started getting the same errors. i had them check and the /tmp file was full again.

the thing is that prior to uploading i had redirected gallery to use /www/thomasanastasia/sessions as the temp file and it went through conficuration correctly. is there somewhere else i need to configure this? and/or can i put a line in the php.ini to make sure it goes there?

What about adding this in the php.ini file....

session.save_path = /www/thomasanastasia/sessions

do you think this will work?

You may need to add this in a .htaccess file, unless you have access to your php.ini (doubtful on a shared server). If you use .htaccess, add this line

php_value session.save_path "/www/thomasanastasia/sessions"

actually i have access to the php.ini and i always have to delete the .htacces files in both the gallery and setup directories when ever i install gallery on a hostway server. if i don't when i go to start configuration i get a 505 error.

so would the code be the same as you just suggested?
