G1 -> G2 w/out perfect G1 or w/G1 on remote server

I am migrating from G1 to G2. I have:

G1 running on a different server (shared host) from G2
G1 not quite running properly (no errors, just does not display pics in albums properly, mod-rewrite issue) on same server (shared host) as G2

Can I upgrade pointing G2 to the G1 on the different server?

If no, can I upgrade G1 to G2 using a not so perfect install (techs say it is due to not having the domain running from the server, but i changed all configs to the IP based address of the new host)

Thoughts?

no. gallery 2 needs to access g1 through the filesystem. you need to enter a filesystem path in the g1->g2 import wizard.

please read the migration instructions at documentation -> installation -> migrate.

I have read it and the issue is that I am not able to get G1 up and running on the new server. It makes it through the config, but does not display the albums correctly. And, always says it has an issue with writing to the htaccess file even though the tech swears writing to htaccess is no problem on the server.

Old server (displays correctly)
