Hi -

I have been using gallery for about 3 months now. Great program.
Anyway I am running FreeBSD 4.6 and Apache 1.3.

I recently purchased a new machine from work. (P3 700 for $75! Great price to upgrade from a P266.) Problem is they removed all the hard drives. So I am going to need to reuse the new 10gig I have on the current machine and I figured I would reinstall FreeBSd and clean up from all the mistakes I have made on that machine.

What I want to know is can I tar the gallery directory, save it off line and then move it to the new machine without having any problems? I figure I might need to go through the setup again, maybe reset some file permissions, but I would hate to lose all the photos, comments, descriptions and so forth. I can always upload them again but with over 1000 images from the last 3 months I rather not do that.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

It should transfer fine, just archive all the files and cp them to their
new location, re-run the configuration and you should be all set.
Just keep in mind the things you already mentioned.

And if you do run into difficulty, we're here to help

As vallimar stated, this shouldn't cause any problems at all, I did the same thing some time ago with nearly no trouble...

I had trouble with the userdb, and had to delete it and recreate it and assign the permissions again. Thankfully I only had about 5 registered users in the Gallery.

But, I'm sure that this was unrelated to the moving of the gallery in the first place. Something went wrong, though.

I've done it for so many times and different hosting, no problem ...

Thanks everyone. Worked great. I was pretty sure it would work since it is basically just web data but I did not want to spend a weekend rebuilding everything. Again thanks for the help. First time I had to use tar to create an archive so I guess I learned something new.
