Ok, for anyone having this same problem I'm working through it. I downloaded the plug in to import the Gallery V1 users and data to my new Gallery 2.2 install. I attempted to import the date for a copy but it failed. I then pointed the migration tool to the original folder on a different sever (The server my old gallery is on) and it strted to import the users but not the albums. I'm making a new copy of the albums folder to place on my new computer running Gallery 2.2 in the hopes that it wil import in to 2.2.
I'll keep you posted.

Are you migrating from a server running 1.X to a new server running 2.X? If so, how are you doing the import? Does the migration tool ask for a different server name? I am trying to map out how I create a new server running 2.X and then move my pictures from the 1.X server to the 2.X server.

I was running 1.X on a Linux back end and upgraded to 2.X running on Windows XP. What I had to do is I did a fresh install of 2.X on Windows XP and then simply took the back up of the Albums folder and imported the pics, users and rights. (all automatic once started). In order to import after you install 2.X, you have to add an extra module that is not there by default. Once you install that module, it's really easy. Let me kow if you need more details or import instructions.

What special module did you load for this import? I am moving my 1.X albums folder now and then would like to import using the module you mention. If this works, it will be much easier than upgrading my org site to 2.2 then migrating. thanks.

When you log in, go to "Site Admin" then in the left hand list choose "Plugins". On the plugins page, choose the "Get more Plugins" tab up top. Go down to the sections that says "Import" and download "Migration". Once done, you will notice it in the left hand column where you choose the original plugins option. Let me know if you need screen shots.

Thanks. I downloaded migration and am ready to try it once I albums get over my new system. I see this on the migration tab: "Copy all or part of an existing Gallery 1 installation into your Gallery 2. It won't modify your Gallery 1 data in any way.".
Does this leave all of my g1 pictures in the g1 albums and won't move them to G2? Is there a difference between migration and upgrade?

it copies the files.
> Is there a difference between migration and upgrade?
there is no upgrade from g1 to g2. there's only migration. you migrate from g1 to g2 by first installing g2 and then importing your g1 data into g2.

Since I was moving to a new computer, this wasn't an issue with me, but what I did was use a back up of the Albums folder that I copied over and imported from that. This left my G1 gallery intact in case I ran in to issues. Since I migrated from a back up, there was no fear about messing up my G1 install and pictures. Once I was confident that my G2 gallery was up and running without issues, I simply un pluged my old computer.

That worked great. I wonder why there are so many posts about moving to a new server and upgrading at the same time and they say they need to upgrade the current host to 2.2 then backup the config and restore it on the new hosts? This is much easier. Get your 1st host up to 1.5.X. Get your 2nd host up to 2.2. Backup the albums directory on the 1st host and copy to the 2nd host. Then use the migration module to pull the albums directory into 2.2. thanks to everyone who helped.

I had some trouble finding the information I needed when I made the move ... but it was my own fault for not reading enough of this forum before I started. This forum is great and all the information I provided to you was given to me in here. I'm happy I could help you, but the praise goes to the others who gave me the information :-D
