Photo Dates What for?

I notice that when I upload a photo to Gallery there is an option to set the date. This information doesn't seem to be used anywhere. Is it possible to search for a date?
I would like to use this to search to find photos that have been uploaded after a certain date. Since the default date is the upload date this would seem to be easy to do.

That date shows up in the 'photo properties' and I also believe it is available
as a sort option. I don't believe the search mechanism checks this field at all.
