I'm considering use Gallery2 to manage a 28 GB image library - is that too large for Gallery2 to effectively handle?

I've found that Gallery2 can run pretty slowly at times and I'm wondering if this will simply exceed it's limits?

Thanks!

28 GB doesn't really describe the size of your collection.
how many items (files) are we talking about?

there are several installations with more than 100'000 items, few are larger than 1 million items.
depending on the number of requests / second and the number of items, you'll have to deactivate some features to keep it running within your tolerance limits.

see:
documentation -> admin & maintenance -> performance.

A typical image will be 5 to 8 megabytes....that means we'd have about 3500 to 5600 images.

Is that too much data for Gallery2 to manage?

Not at all, G2 shouldn't have any problems at all with that number of items.

@large files:
G2.2's exif module scans the file for exif data on each photo page impression. I suggest you disable the exif module to see if the page loading time / CPU load goes down considerably.

We'll fix that in one of the future versions of the exif module.
