Custom Album Thumbnail showing multiple pictures (collage/mosaic)

Hi all,
My first post here. Thanks for the great work, the number of features Gallery offers is really impressive.
I'm currently trying to tune Gallery 2.2.1 to my needs.

There is this feature that I've been looking for but that I can't find so far.

By default, the album's thumbnail is the same as the first photo is that album.
Even though you can customize this to be a different picture, the problem is that a thumbnail of an album still looks too much like the thumbnail of a picture.
I also noticed that you can customize the frame so that albums look different from pictures, but I would like to go one step further by having the album thumbnail be a "mosaic" or "collage" of the pictures it is composed of.
Something like this:

I can't believe this hasn't been thought about and discussed before though.

To understand very easily what I'm thinking of, I have done manually for one album what I would like to have done automatically for all albums:

Actually I downloaded the album thumbnail from my KoffeePhoto page which provides this feature automatically:

Please let me know if there is an plugin or a theme that allows to do this automatically when importing an album.

Hi Thomas,

It would be really cool if there was a module published for doing this. I'll be the first one to use it. I've been searching for the same functionality, but no luck so far.

But maybe you can use Picasa's collage tool for doing this. Picasa has a photo collage tool, where you can generate a photo collage from the content in its folder and it will be placed in the same folder. Then in Gallery2 you just have to configure your albums like this, that it will always choose the first picture in each folder for it's album thumbnail.
