Migrating from G1 to G2: Directories?

I printed out the instructions on migrating from G1 to G2 (http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:migration) and something in the Overview section doesn't make sense. Step 2 in the overview says to install G2 into a new "folder" on the server. Step 6 recommends that you "ensure your old Gallery 1 URLs still work with Gallery 2".

If it's installed into a new location, the old URLs should not work.

Would it break anything if I ignored all that and, after making a backup and running the pre-upgrade verifications, simply install G2 right over my G1 setup? I'm currently running v1.5.6.

You missed that there is a section called "Preserving Gallery 1 URLs." That section answers your question about old URLs being made to work.

You also missed: "For optimum results, please read this entire page before starting."

You can do your migration in whatever way you like, using whatever methods you like, but we have put together fairly complete directions. If you follow those directions explicitly, you will have a greater chance of getting fast support if something goes wrong.

If you install your G2 over top of your G1, you will have to verify that your album data does not get deleted before you import. If you have any problems during the import, you might have to reinstall G1 to assist in troubleshooting and data cleanup. It's best to have the two installations in parallel, but anything is possible.

I hadn't missed that second one, I haven't started doing anything yet. I got as far as the overview and said, "what the...?" at its step 6.

Thank you for the answer.

Finally did it. It took way longer than I expected, including over an hour to upload the (extracted) files. The entire process, including prep, installation, migration, and reconfiguration, was about as time consuming and nerve wracking as upgrading Windows. The only real problem I had with the migration aspect of this was the bit about reconfiguring G1 to be usable after it was moved. Maybe I was just too tired to deal with it, or maybe it's simply not providing enough info in the docs for how to manually change the settings, but I simply decided "ah, screw it. If the upgrade fails, I'll just restore G1".
