changing image size parameters - when do they take effect?

I went in and changed the image size settings in configuration so that there was no intermediate size, just a resized full image and the thumbnail. But the uploads to existing albums still are showing 3 sized images. Does this change only apply to newly-created albums? |

FAQ: I changed a value on Step 3 of the configuration wizard (or in config.php), but the change isn't taking effect. What's going on?

Thanks for the info.. one follow-up question.
If I change an album's properties to not have an intermediate size, does it only affect newly-added images to that album? I made the changes and the existing album didn't change.

Also, yes.
You need to remove the existing resized versions.

But any new images will affect the new changes right? So the gallery knows that the format has changed and supports referencing the old and new images differently? I don't need to delete the old images. I just want to know if my changes will work for new images added without breaking any existing stuff that's been uploaded?
