Well it seems I have royally screwed up my G2 2.2 installation somehow. I thought the integration was working since I've been doing everything in Admin only, but I have real issues with users and user groups between the 2.
First of all - I need to keep a stand-alone G2 installation as well as drupal integrated, and it seems Im having the real problem with my standalone. When viewed through Drupal, I can see private albums when logged in as admin, that is - albums which require certain G2 member group access in order to view. But even logging in as admin, I cannot see these albums in G2 standalone. This only happened after I installed the integration module. It remains this way even after disabling the module.
In standalone, I can actually SEE the private albums, but no thumbnails, just only the titles for those albums. If I enter the albums, I can see the titles for each of the photos (where the thumbs should be), but there are no thumbnails for the images, and if I actually click on one of the photo titles it opens to an empty outline with a broken image icon at the top left. ALL THE PIX ARE ACTUALLY THERE. I am thinking this is now a problem with user groups being processed correctly? But its happening even inside G2 standalone, and logging in as admin through Drupal does allow me to see all of those private access albums and images.
I learned about this because one of my G2 users alerted me that he couldn't view any of his own private album images. I don't know how to fix this. How do users and groups get synced between G2 and Drupal, and how do my users get access to the albums they are in the member-groups to see now?
Please help! Thanks,
Christian

Can you please post which version of the gallery module you are using!? Are your users/groups are listed (correctly) in G2? Do you have CleanURLs enabled in Drupal and/or G2? In both standalone and embedded mode? If your images are broken in standalone mode only, this sounds like a url rewrite issue? Try to disable CleanURLs temporarily to verify? Compare the image urls with url rewrite enabled/disabled, ... I guess you will find some rewrite rules broken.

First of all....I never had any issue at all with G2 standalone UNTIL I installed the G2/drupal module for wrapping G2 inside Drupal. As stated, since then my users with private (group access only) albums cannot see the images, even though they can see the album and image files and maneuver through them. It can navigate it just acts like everything is a broken link, and it only does it for group specific rights.
I am using the latest official release of the Drupal G2 module, from this page here: http://drupal.org/project/gallery
Its NOT the development release, it's this right here towards the bottom of the page:

Searching WWW I found multiple issues with x-treme theme and embedded gallery. Some of them also reported issues with user authentication. So I guess this is somehow related to your G2 theme. Nobody was able to solve the problem, they all switched to a different theme instead (e.g. PGtheme). Have you tried a different theme on your site? Does using a standard theme like Matrix help?
