How should I recover backup of gallery 1 into new install of gallery 2?

What should my workflow be for importing a backup of gallery 1.5x to a fresh install of gallery 2? My server was recently destroyed and I've got rebuild my 2 gallery installations (from separate domains) from an old backup from February. I've got a new serverspace and want to use gallery 2 instead of gallery 1.x As I see it, I have 2 options: Should I have my webmaster install gallery 1.x on the new server and recover my previous galleries first, then upgrade to gallery 2.x? OR Should I have him install 2.x and then somehow import the 1.x galleries. thanks |

the migration path from g1 to g2 requires a working g1 installation.
please read:
docs -> installation -> migrating from g1.
install g1, restore your backups. verify that g1's working fine. then install g2, import the g1 data to g2 according to the migration instructions and then you can finally get rid of g1.
if you can't get your g1 working anymore, you can build a g2 gallery from a folder of images / sub-folders. see: docs -> usage -> how to add items -> from local server.
