Creating Albums Automatically?

I have just installed the latest version of Gallery2 on my home web server. I am planning to use this to share photos with my family. I currently have my photos all stored on a directory on my file server - each time I hook up my digital camera the files are uploaded here in directories named for the upload date. I want to convert all of these directories into albums. Is there a way to achieve this automatically? Ideally, the new album would leave the pictures in their current location and not duplicate them. Is this possible?
