I installed a Gallery 2 setup over at my Dreamhost hosted site for my friends & I to share our pics. I've run into a few issues/have a few questions:
1. The 'hidden album' plugin: After installing this, I see the ability to 'hide album' on an album's "edit album" page, but it doesn't seem to do anything, in that it is still visible to everyone (guest & users).
1a. For the 'hidden albums', is there a way to 'hide' it from everyone? IOW, even registered users/etc can't see it, but if they go directly to the link it is there?
2. The 'user albums' plugin: It works nice. What I was hoping to do was set up some sort of template beyond that, where it would create a bit of a subtree for the user (e.g. user album w/ children of say "public album", "private album", "group shared album").
3. Is there a way for a user to define their own groups? IOW, can User X declare Users A, B & C into a group, or do they have to go through the admin?

1. the hidden album http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:hidden
The user will get access if he/she know the url. It is only 'hidden' from its display in the parent album.
1a. Use the permissions system not the hidden: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Quick_Start_Guide#Configure_Permissions
2. I will let other answer as I don't use that module much. It would take some understanding of the innards of G2 to modify the module to create the tree you would like. Users can set their own permissions so It would be up to the user to configure their albums and items for different permissions.
3. The admin puts the users in specific group.
IOW ?

Hi dave ...
1) That's the problem though. I have the hidden thing installed and it doesn't seem to be working at all. We select the "hide album" option, but it is still visible
3) That's what I figured, although I was hoping users could define their own groups. I guess not.
IOW = "In Other Words"
Thanks

1. works for me:
Go to:
http://langleycom.com/gallery2/main.php
there you will see 2 albums. BU there is one that is hidden:
don't click this until you confirm that the above link does not show the hidden album:
http://langleycom.com/gallery2/v/hidden
3. The admin should be able to define a bunch of groups then the owner of the album can give permissions has they see fit.

Just to follow up on Dave's comments on 1. - I think by design the thumbnail for the hidden album shows up (for that user) in its parent album once the user has visited the url for the album. If you want it to remain hidden even for users who've been into the album you'd need to modify a little bit of code.

Just installed a fresh copy of Gallery 2.2.4
I created a single album containing 2 photos with the default permissions since the install (no rewrite).
Tried using the "hide album" feature on it... and it dosen't work at all.
If someone has it working, are special permissions also needed that I'm unaware of?
Please help.

Ka1N,
try the 2 links that I showed above. It is important that you don't go to the hidden album first or it becomes unhidden.
If you have gone to that album in the past then it becomes unhidden.
That is how the hide album feature works. If you want different behavior try permissions.

Hi,
I've checked your example. Unfortunatly, as soon as I click the second link (after going to the first...) I get an error page:
File Not Found (Sorry)
The Web server cannot find the file or script you asked for.
Please try the search function.
Click the back button to go to the previous page

Would you mind putting 1 item and album in the hidden album?
Now I have to figure out why I'm unable to get it to work

Perhpas you don't understand the hidden album and how it works.
it only remains hidden until it is visited.
added a item for you. in the description of the album is a link to another hidden album.
see if you can find the album before you click the link in the description.

you see... that's pretty much how I want to do it. I can't even get that to work properly. And to what I understand, all I have to do is enable the "Hide Album" checkbox in the album property window.
It dosen't work well for me.
Also, wish there was a way that it would remain hidden instead of being visible via cookie.
Must have done something wrong. Will retrace the docs lol

If it does not have the behavior you want there is 2 other options:
Permissions and password protected albums/items.
