A buddy installed Gallery in Oct. '03? He is no longer available and sorry but I don't have a clue. Server will soon not support PHP 4. Gallery is an important part of whiskerclub.org and I would like to maintain it. I have read the 1.5.7 instructions but don't understand. Server support says they can't help.

The following information is required to get an answer:
Get this information from the PHP diagnostic (in the configuration wizard).

Don't know how to get there!!! Some files will not open because of "safe mode"

Gallery URL (optional but very useful):
Gallery version: 1.4-pl2
Apache version:
PHP version (don't just say PHP 4, please):
Graphics Toolkit:
Operating system:
Web browser/version (if applicable):

Hello,

try to find out if the PHP on your Server has the setting "Safe Mode" set to ON.

To reach the config wizard of your Gallery, simply go to http://www.your.gallery.net/setup/
If that does not work, you need to change the permissions of the setup folder.
You can do this via FTP, or if available via a web control panel.

Thanks Jens
You sent the following message and I inserted some questions and comments.

try to find out if the PHP on your Server has the setting "Safe Mode" set to ON.

I guess I do that by contacting server support. If I have "Safe Mode" set to off does that create a problem with security?

To reach the config wizard of your Gallery, simply go to http://www.your.gallery.net/setup/

I guess that's config_data. Go-Live won't open the file I wonder if that is because it is not a golive site or is it "safe mode"? I did a backup from the control panel and downloaded to my hard drive and can open it there to see what it says but I read that has to be open to download the updated gallery.

If that does not work, you need to change the permissions of the setup folder.
You can do this via FTP, or if available via a web control panel.

Went to the control panel and changed permission and it shows the change but I still can't get the file to open.
Here is a shot in the dark from an uneducated point of view. Is it possible that I could get server support to set safe mode to off, save the albums to my hard drive, rename the gallery on the server, upload 1.5.7, delete the old gallery, upload the albums to the server again with a result that everything would work as it did before? If that does not work I could use the backup to restore but don't want to try that until I feel the process would work.
Thanks for your help!!!!!!!! I appreciate your time and apologize for my inadequacy.

Hello

1.) Safe Mode
There are a lot of discussions about Safe Mode in the net. We say that if an application is unsecure, then Safe Mode can only help a little, but the application is still unsecure. I suggest you google around for this topic and build your own opinion.

2.) Setup
No, thats wrong. Don't edit config_data!
The config wizard is a webbased configuration. The result is the file config.php

Greetings,

Jens

I tried to upload but it didn't work so I restored. The instructions say to put gallery in the config mode and I am not sure what that means. Do I just open the config wizard or do I need to do something when I get there?

Config mode means that the setup folder is accessable via browser and the config.php file is writable for the webserver.

Yes, just open (go to) the config wizard with your browser.
