cache file extensions

Would it be possible for cache files (i.e. .dat files) to be named with the actual extension of the file type? I understand that the type of the file is stored in the -meta.inc file, and there are reasons it was done this way. But for my purposes it would be awfully convenient if a jpeg was .JPG and a png .PNG, and so on.
