I'm not sure what the advantages of Google Checkout are. I would vote for Authorize.net support. Although, if the Google checkout didn't require leaving the home website and was relatively transparent to the user, I would use it instead of PayPal.

Authorize.net isn't a payment processor, it's a payment gateway and as such replaces the physical card-swipe machine; you still need in addition an (expensive) merchant account to process the transactions and credit you with the funds. By contrast, both Paypal and Google Checkout process the payments themselves, and send you the funds directly.

While most small businesses can arrange a merchant account to receive credit and debit card payments, the costs for very low transaction volumes are prohibitive, and you still need to pay further chargers to Authorize.net or an equivalent, on top. Paypal and Google have - relative to the alternatives at the kind of transaction volumes that most Gallery users will achieve - low rates, no monthly fee, and Google itself is half the price of Paypal. Only once your turnover tops maybe half a million dollars a year (quite a lot for an individual photographer) you can start to negotiate sensible fees that will compete with Google or Paypal.

As far as not transferring a third party site: any payment solution which involves taking the card details directly instead is going to require very much more sophisticated security than a simple package like Gallery running on a shared webserver is likely ever to be able to provide.

Excellent! Thank you for your help and quick reply.

Re Google Checkout: I'm keen to use Google Checkout once it becomes available for merchants in New Zealand.

I'm interested in Google Checkout, but at the moment they require an SSL cert for https postback. So I haven't decided to use Google Checkout yet, still use Paypal. For the very low number of transactions I'm processing, I'm not ready to pay for the cert, extra IP an cost of hosting associated with it. But I'm sure others will find an advantage in using Google Checkout as they're cheaper and sent the payment to your bank account right away.

I'm having problems updating to 0.4.0 at the moment. The installation went ok, but when I click on "configure" I only get a blank page. I'm using ICE Theme w/ the latest gallery code.

Gallery version = 2.2.5 core 1.2.0.7
PHP version = 5.2.6 cgi
Webserver = Apache/2.2.9 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8b mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635
Database = mysql 5.0.51a-community, lock.system=flock
Toolkits = ImageMagick, Gd, Thumbnail
Acceleration = partial/1800, none/3600
Operating system = Linux 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5PAE #1 SMP Wed Jun 25 14:21:46 EDT 2008 i686
Default theme = ice
gettext = enabled
Locale = en_US
Browser = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1
Rows in GalleryAccessMap table = 99
Rows in GalleryAccessSubscriberMap table = 3144
Rows in GalleryUser table = 215
Rows in GalleryItem table = 3137
Rows in GalleryAlbumItem table = 163
Rows in GalleryCacheMap table = 33515

Thank you for the effort you put in this module. I'm very grateful for it.

Looks like a typo crept in at the last moment - sorry. I've fixed it and updated the repository - it should take about 5 hours from now to appear. I've also compiled in the fr.po I was sent (thanks benoit.) Look for code revision 1600 to appear.

I'll start a new thread for 0.4.0 reports.

Hi Alec,

Well nearly 3 weeks live now and the module is working very well, we have processed a heck of a lot of orders and out of that only a couple of people needed help using it. Also there were a lot more people adept to using Paypal here than I thought there would be, about 90% of the sales have gone through there.

I was wondering is it possible to get the transaction and customer data out, so that I can convert it and upload it to MYOB? I would also like to use it for analysis to see what areas did well and what have not. (csv files work well)

Interesting idea.

You will like version 0.4.1, I think - you will be able to help people by adding products to their cart, dynamically, also discounts etc. You can also examine what people have put in their baskets before they checkout an order.

Glad it's working for you.

That last one would have been very handy yesterday, a lady kept messing the order up.

Where can we put a "wish list" of ideas for the module?

It's helpful (to me) for comments etc to be in the latest thread (there's a new thread for 0.4.0 which is currently in the repository) - you're welcome to add feature requests to the codex page too.
