Adding Images Manually

Ok, here is the situation. We are running a site where there will be thousands of potential image uploads per day. In order to speed up the system we were thinking about offloading the processing by having a form that would just dump the images in a directory to be processed at a later (slower) time. My question is: "Is there an *easy* way to have these images put into gallery?" I know there are modules like ItemAdd etc, but was just wondering if somebody has done or written anything that would be remotely close to what I have described above.
