EXIF pop-up page (Ebony theme album.tpl)

A few of the themes have a link under each thumb that pops up the exif info. I am using the ebony theme which does have a pop-up in the photo page but not the thumbs page. I am trying to edit the album.tpl file to add this feature. I have the link text under each thumb but am stumped at what code I should copy to get it to open the exif in a pop-up.

I have tried copying all sorts of code from photo.tpl but nothing works.
