WP Page Number Change After Updating Both WP and WPG2

I don't think this is preventable issue. I just finished upgrading to WP 2.6 and WPG2 3.0.7, and my hard links pointed to a now non-existent page for WPG2, got a WP error about the page was not found. WPG2 listed a new page number in paths, and in WP's Manage/Pages the old page was gone and replaced by one with the new number.

Not sure if this is a function of Deactivating/Reactivating the plugin during the upgrade or not, but thought I would post this proactively for those of us who use hard URLs to our G2 pages in header and sidebar links.

So no complaints, thanks WPG2 people for all the hard work you do keeping up with WP's wayward ways and making it come out alright.:)

Seedy,

If you use the deactivate all plugins functions then the page ID should not change, unfortunately if not then yes the pageid will change. Switching on permalinks would stop this issue as you can just rename the WPG2 page slug back to what ever value you had in your hard URL's.

Of course the real game is to avoid the hard URL's in the first place :)

Actually, this is the first time I used the easy-peasy button. Before I deactivated them one (or two, slow connection) at a time and it didn't change. So now I'm really baffled.

I dislike hard links as well, but many automatic things (not to mention Automattic things) can create tiresome issues. In my case it was wanting to have the Page titles show up in a certain order in my header, and they would spontaneously rearrange after editing a Page. And then there were pages I did not want in the header, so I gave up and did it the actually easier way.:)

EditRemoved petty grumbling

I wonder if you can use the page Order sort sequence to control the order the pages appear instead of messing around with the page ids???

I'm beginning to think WP 2.6 has some issues. Went to try a new theme, and when I reverted to my old theme (a hacked version of something from the 2.1 days), all my sidebar widgets were deleted. Just had to re-add and rearrange them, but never saw that one before, and I was just messing around with themes in 2.5.1 with no issues. My custom ones were still there, just taken out of the sidebar. Can't be bothered to be scientific and try it again.

The page order changed when it reassigned WPG2 a new number, and I would have had to deal with trying that. One advantage of hard links, which I'll keep until I get a new theme going.

I'm getting closer to looking for something more integrated, given that I'm doing a photoblog most of the time. WPG2 works well, especially considering the wayward path that WP takes, but we're at 2.6 and it (WP) still can't self-update. And one important thing that kept me with WP, Spam Karma, now probably has a limited compatibility life, unless the good Doctor finds some new folks to take the baton. Askimet can kiss my Askimet.

I was surprised at the speed of the WP 2.6 release as it seemed to come out of the left field in a rush.. When the Gallery2 developers rewrote Gallery they moved to incorporating a test system inside every function which is why G2 RC releases and even development build tend to be pretty rock solid. Until WP developers move to some kind of test harness so they can really test WP I tend to avoid the rush to upgrade to any release until a few weeks after the release..

Hope you get your issues sorted out..

Sorry to resurrect this oldie, but something else came up that is related, which is that WPG2 uses that page number for photos that are linked from posts on WP if you use the button. Which means that after the recent upgrade to WP all of the photos disappeared from my recent posts...which is most of the content.

So I'm back to separation now, still keep WPG2 active for the random sidebar photo but that's it.

Hope this can be sorted out if it's not just my issue.

Hiya Seedy,

As WPG2 does not use the page number when using WPG2 Tags, it sounds to me you are using the insert a link to your photos as a URL option which is problematic due to these very reasons. I would and do always recommend using the WPG2 Tags to insert a photo.

Hi Greg,

I used the WPG2 button to insert those images.

Cannot prove it any more, went back through my posts and looked, but what still remains to be done because I missed it is redoing all the links to the Gallery page that the photo came from. So the photo shows up correctly now, the link to the photo album goes to a missing WP page.

Example:

Quote:
<a href="http://MYSITE.com/wordpress/?page_id=87&g2_itemId=3598"><img src="http://MYSITE.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3598&g2_
GALLERYSID=8c353a67f9314b3ea2e9ad21e5cd0f" alt="" title="" class="g2image_float_left" /></a>

That is one of the older ones look like they worked as you describe, but I remember frantically fixing some of the later ones when I realised that all I had was text and placeholders in those posts. And no, I don't understand it either, just remember doing it, now need to fix the links as well.

Never mind. I've got the photos displaying on WP again. Hope it holds up until I get my Zenphoto albums worked up.

Thank you, ozgreg, for WPG2, which helped me overcome being locked out myself from G2 because of maint. Mode, for some reason I could get in in WPG2 and turn it off, only took a few tries until it responded and stayed that way.
