The following information is required to get an answer:
Get this information from the PHP diagnostic (in the configuration wizard).
Gallery URL (optional but very useful): http://www.orientalstampart.com/v-web/gallery/
Gallery version: 1.5.7? Latest stable gallery 1 version
Apache version: Debian platform
PHP version (don't just say PHP 4, please): 4.4.7
Graphics Toolkit: unknown
Operating system: unknown
Web browser/version (if applicable): n/a

Just spent 24h downloading the old version of our gallery, uploaded the unzipped newer version of Gallery 1, and now I can't access the configuration wizard... *sigh* Do you know why I might be getting this message:
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.
?

Thanks,
Heather

Hello Heather,

when i look at your site, i still see an error 500?
Do you have a file called ".htaccess" in your Gallery folder?
If yes, remove it.
There should also be such a file in the setup folder. Remove that also.

After doing this, the error 500 should not be there.

Thanks Jens! There's also an .htaccess.swo and an .htaccess.swp -- should I remove those as well?

Hmm,

those files are definitely not from Gallery. They seem to be "swap" files.
Delete them also.

Yeah, they looked a bit strange. Thanks! Of course the gallery is still totally hosed, but I think we need to change hosting service--those guys are absolutely unhelpful. =( They told me to upgrade to Gallery 2 by adding all 23,000 photos from Gallery 1 by hand, instead of with the import function (because the process keeps timing out) ... geeze.

OUCH.

Please use the import functionality. Otherwise you would lose a lot of metadata. Like album structure, upload date, comments, view counts etc.

It might of course be that you have to do it in chunks.

Oh, I know! How I wish I -could- use the import functionality! But as I said, the process keeps timing out, and the hosting service refuses to provide any help... =( Even as we speak, the gallery 1 version doesn't work well -- huge loading time for pages, dat.lock errors everywhere... it's just a nightmare!

So I'm really thankful for your response and help, Jens. Thank you very much. =) Hopefully we can find a new hosting service soon...

i see.

They would have to increase the memory limit and execution time limit for PHP.
But if they are not that cooperative, changing the hoster is probably a good idea.
