In Theme Image Rotations & Transformations

I'd like to add a number of effects to a new theme, such as as mirror effects and perhaps some other image transformations. I can see the G2 supported tools have the necessary features, but I'm wondering if there is any way to call these transformation from the a .tpl file? Can anyone point me to some code examples?
