Is my Gallery version NOT upgradable? (v1.5-RC2)

The following information is required to get an answer:
Get this information from the PHP diagnostic (in the configuration wizard).
Gallery URL (optional but very useful): http://theboxartden.com/Gallery/
Gallery version: v1.5-RC2
Apache version: Um ... Platform Type: Debian
PHP version (don't just say PHP 4, please): 4.4.7
Graphics Toolkit: ImageMagick 6.3.3 03/08/07 Q16
Operating system: ??? Mine? WinXP - Server? Used to be Linux, but since changing their 'platform' I dunno
Web browser/version (if applicable): Firefox V 2.0.0.9

We're having trouble with our Gallery - it's an older version and we have waaaaaaay too many images - I think it has been overwhelmed. Anyway, I wanted to upgrade - my web host offers an upgrade to Gallery 2, though I'm not sure off-hand what version - but when I asked them about it, I was told my current Gallery version (v1.5-RC2) is 'not upgradeable' - how can that be? If I install Gallery 2, will I lose everything I now have in Gallery?

Is it possible to have two versions running on the site at once? For that matter, is it possible to have two applications of the same version running on one site at once?

We have worked long and very, very hard on our Gallery to get it looking just so and we would all be devastated if we lost it all and had to start all over again.

Maybe I should also point out that I am NOT a computer tech - I'm clueless, which is why I wanted to use the server host's installation program rather than trying to do this by myself. I'm only in charge of the web site because my associates seem to think my limited knowledge of HTML makes me a technical genius. (Insert heavy sigh here).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Some older versions are not supported for migration:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:migration

If you G1.5 is working migration should work anyway.

Yes.

Yes you can have as many G1 or G2s as you like on one server.

Run the servers G2 install and run the migration. It is not a upgrade but a migration. G1 data is not lost/changed/altered during migration.

What is the mater with the G1 install?

Thanks, Dave! I will study that page on migration. The problems we're having with v1.5 mostly have to do with creating and moving subalbums. When we try to move a sub-album or an image form one album to another, the gallery tree is missing and the move button is greyed out - just can't do it. We have over 10,000 images right now and I think it may just be too many.

Thanks again!

I assume with lots of sub albums, so yes moving stuff about will become a issue. Perhaps more memory will help in that regard as the album tree has to load in php memory to render the tree.
post a php info link to see the memory available.

Um, what now? I meant it when I said I'm clueless.

FAQ: What information is required when I ask for help in the forums?
