I uploaded all the files to the server. I got an error that the 7 .htaccess files were not allowed since they started with a dot. Not sure what to do about this and if it effects me in some way. I finished the install but am stuck on what to do next and wonder if these files are creating a block for me. Trying hard to learn how gallery works.

DOES YOUR .HTACCESS FILE HAVE WRITE ACCESS

Some hosts don't allow for .htaccess files. If that is the case then you will not be able to use the urlrewrite module.
