Bypass album view?

I've got a sub-album and would like to bypass the generic album view (rows/columns) grid and link directly to the first picture in the album with microthumbs etc.

Example sub-album list:
www.domain.com/gallery/subalbum_list

Want to link from sub-album to first pic (not album01):
www.domain.com/gallery/album01/first_pic

Any tips?
I'm guessing it has to do with adding $id to the makeGalleryUrl in view_album.php but I can't seem to get it to work.
