it would be nice if i could give permissions to a user that only allowed them to edit captions --not albums names or any descriptions-- just the captions of images within an album. |

In 1.3.5 (available in pre-release version from the downloads page) the person who uploads a photo can have permission to edit caption, custom fields etc.
Would that address your problem?

...actually, i think it would be a very nice feature if the admin could allow users to have the sungle permision to edit captions, only.
not to be redundant, but so many pictures are uploaded to a "family style" gallery site and often done quickly that the images NEVER get proper names -- it would be great if my family member viewers who would be confused by any other privileges could have the privilege to help name images.
personally, i think this would make a great "single" permission (minus any others) to include in the gallery admin app.

OK, it might be something you want, but it doesn't seem general enough to me to put into gallery. People can mess things up, and there is no record of what was there.
If I were you, I would encourage people to use the comments field to add details about the who what and where of an image, and then someone can tidy the captions later.
Or modify the code, and don't forget to share your mod in the customization forum.
