Greetings fellow Gallery users,

I have implemented an iPhone client for Gallery. The application is code ready and I am currently doing device testing.

The application offers following features:
(1) Support for Gallery1 and Gallery2.
(2) User can subscribe to multiple galleries.
(3) Depending on access privileges the user can only view or view/add/delete photos in a gallery.

I am interested in community response to:

(1) How many Gallery users currently have iPhone / iPod touch and would be inclined to use the iPhone client?

(2) Would anyone be interested in having their Gallery listed in the pre-loaded gallery list that the application will bundle?

(3) Who is right person to talk with regarding usage of Gallery logo / name in the application? I want to make sure that proper copyright / trademark information is included in the application and all appropriate stakeholders have approved the application.

Thanks in advance!

I do.
(2) Would anyone be interested in having their Gallery listed in the pre-loaded gallery list that the application will bundle?
Not really a public gallery.
(3) Who is right person to talk with regarding usage of Gallery logo / name in the application? I want to make sure that proper copyright / trademark information is included in the application and all appropriate stakeholders have approved the application.

FYI
I have tried pixelpipe and it worked with Gallery <2.3 but not with Gallery 2.3. It seems like the (pixelpipe) couldn't get the login transaction right. I am thinking of downgrading to Gallery <2.3 to make it work again atleast for the time being. Your efforts for Gallery2.3/iPhone integration will be greatly appreciated by the community, I am sure.

Thx,
Qaiser

I have an iPhone, and I'm looking for something just like this, so I don't have to use flickr so my image library is on my own domain.

Well, yes- but it's not present yet, as I would jumpstart the change over to it if an iPhone app existed. I have a site full of Apple II hardware images, that all need to be redone, and also take pictures at times and just want to post them quickly and reference a URL in IRC. I use twitpic right now, though again, something under my own domains would be the preferred method.

(3) Who is right person to talk with regarding usage of Gallery logo / name in the application? I want to make sure that proper copyright / trademark information is included in the application and all appropriate stakeholders have approved the application.

Not sure how to answer this, other than if you're putting the application in via the iTunes store, you need to read all their terms, and what not. Or if you distribute via Cydia, for jailbroken devices, you are more free to do however you desire.

Thanks in advance!

Hi qaiserc and tdiaz,

Thanks for your response.

qaiserc - I have tested the iPhone application with Gallery 2.3 and it works!

tdiaz -
(1) I was asking about using the Gallery application name / logo etc. in the iPhone client. I guess I need to touch base with Bharat Mediratta or others who may hold the copyrights to the Gallery application.
(2) The iPhone client application will be deployed via Apple App Store only.

Thanks

(2) Would anyone be interested in having their Gallery listed in the pre-loaded gallery list that the application will bundle?

Good deal, I can't wait.

It would motivate me to do more images, faster - if I could combine iPhoto sourced apps, and on demand stuff, and use Gallery 2 - and WordPress...

Dudes' tryin' to get me to use flickr because of the community it offers, but you can't have flickr within your own theme and/or domain..

Probably should ask over there, but I hope Gallery 2 can be migrated to 3..

The problem with the older version of Gallery is that we can't create an upload folder utilizing the API. There's an easy workaround though simply create a folder with the name of 'via Pixelpipe' as the user you'd like to upload as on your gallery website. After you've created the album you can add Gallery as a destination for upload with our iPhone, Android, iPhoto, Windows Live, Picasa, Lightroom... clients http://pixelpipe.com/tools

A gallery client for the iPhone is very exciting! I was thinking last night that I should try writing my first iPhone app and make it a gallery client but now I see the work is already done! Please let us know when this might be available in the App Store for us to test.

Thanks

Ah well, died, dead and now buried.

Care to cough up any source code to whats been done so far? Maybe I can take a crack at it.

I'm not the original poster, however, I have written my own iPhone client. It is on the Appstore now (for free), if you search for "Gallery Remote" you should be able to find it.

I should also add, my app is simply for posting pictures taken on the iPhone to your own gallery (or any gallery you a have a login for). It was intended to solve my problem where I couldn't upload pictures from the iPhone like I used to with my E70. I'm afraid, at the moment, it interacts very badly with the new iPhone 3.0 OS. I made the Appstore submission before upgrading my iPhone to the developer version, it should work fine for iPhone 2.2.1 OS though.

As an aside, does anyone know the best way of getting it added to some list of Gallery clients on here?

Hi, nice one Daagaak with this app. This is just what i've been looking for. The only problem I see with it (and why I'm not going to be able to make use of it) is that is doesn't seem to support HTTP authentication (with or without SSL). Its a pretty big omission seeing as rather a lot of people want to keep their gallery private. If you ever implement this - and I'm sure a lot of people would be extremely grateful if you did - it'd be good if you could update this thread.

keep up the work!

I'll get that in the next version, I do use authentication but only the standard Gallery authentication. I'll work on HTTP auth for the next release.

fantastic Daagaak! Would HTTP authentication over SSL be much more work? It'd be great to be able to upload stuff as soon as i've taken pics!

It shouldn't be too much, I'm a little hampered at the moment though. Although I'm bug fixing (and planning on implementing HTTP auth tomorrow). The current Xcode that ships with the 3.0 SDK is incapable of building a valid 2.2.1 binary. Apparently it is considered a bug but it means I can't build 2.2.1 appstore binaries till that is fixed.

I've just implemented HTTP Basic auth. I don't have any plans to do HTTP Digest auth at the moment, it would mean finding an MD5 library in order to do the hashing. As I said above, it'll be a while before this version can hit the appstore because of my currently crippled Xcode.

I just installed Gallery Upload 1.0.2 on my iPhone 3G. It's unable to list any albums from my Gallery2 installations. I have Gallery 2.2.4 and Gallery 2.3 on two different servers. With older version of Gallery Upload I were able to list the albums on 2.2.4 but 2.3 complained about the response of the server.

Any suggestions what I should do? Is Gallery Upload working with everyone else?

I have the same problem. The album list page comes up but is empty. I can attempt to upload a photo which appears to complete (despite having no album selected). When I look in the Gallery though no photo has been uploaded. Thanks for your continued effort on this app.

I've had this reported by a third person as well, if either one of you wants to let me have a user account on your gallery (with only access to one test album, of course) I'd be happy to track down the bug. It is hard to fix it alone because I can't replicate it on my own installation.

I did a bit of troubleshooting myself. If a user with only a few allowable albums tries to use the application it works fine (i.e. it shows all the target albums and uploads successfully). If a user with lots of albums logs in the application fails to retrieve the list of available albums. If an album is selected from user with few albums still, user with many albums can still successfully upload. Hope that helps.

Is it possible to remove ".jpg" from the caption on upload?

Ok, could you quantify "lots" please? I have a handful of galleries, probably totalling 15-20, so I'm guessing more than that.

Sorry for the long delays between replies, problems are twofold. I'm very busy at work at the moment and have more than one personal project that I'm working on in my spare time. That's compounded with not being able to get this forum to send me email notifications of replies, so its driven by when I actually remember to look at the thread.

I'm not sure of the exact number, but probably 300-500 albums with 11100 photos total.

Your effort is appreciated no matter the pace!

That works for me also. I made a user with access to only two of my albums, retrieved the list of those two albums in Gallery Upload, changed the user to my normal account with couple of albums and was able to send the pictures to the selected album.

I think you get the number of albums by running Site Admin - Maintenance - System information. My info:
Rows in GalleryAccessMap table = 24
Rows in GalleryAccessSubscriberMap table = 2778
Rows in GalleryUser table = 4
Rows in GalleryItem table = 2720
Rows in GalleryAlbumItem table = 76
Rows in GalleryCacheMap table = 0

I probably have 76 albums then.

I would also like the .jpg removed from the caption. I would like if the EXIF information was included.

I've just submitted a new version to the appstore review process with the following changelog:

* Reworked HTTP communicaton system, this has resulted in a much faster upload speed now.
* HTTPS support for Gallery installations behind SSL certificates.
* Many iPhone 3.0 UI updates
* EXIF data is now preserved on uploaded images if you have chosen not to automatically rotate uploaded images.
(Note: You can enable rotation based on EXIF data in your Gallery site admin setup, Site Admin -> EXIT/IPTC)
* Once uploaded, you can choose to open the gallery page for your image in Safari, or copy the URL to the clipboard, from the action menu.
* You may now choose to (or not to) add the .jpg suffix to your uploads.
* UI rotation is now enabled again.

I believe this covers most of the problem people have listed above. As for the problems with large numbers of albums, I hope this is cured by the new HTTP code in this version. The bad news is that this has taken enough of my spare time up that I've decided to charge for it (only in the $0.99/£0.59 tier though). However, everyone who already has the app as of today should still be able to upgrade for free.

Just upgraded it. Works fine with my own Gallery2.3 running on Debian Lenny over HTTPS(self-sign certificat). Recognized several hundreds of albums.

Japanese characters were shown in broken single-byte characters.

It's even better with multi-byte encoding support and recognition of album-subalbum relationship.

\o/ Worked for me too. I'm delighted. So delighted I deleted the app so I could re-install just to pay you $0.99. Alas, since I already had it, it let me download for free. Perhaps you have an amazon wishlist you'd like to share?

App is great! Works fine on my 445 albums. I did notice when attempting to edit the caption in portrait mode (iphone) the caption sometimes disappears behind/below the keyboard while I'm trying to edit it. This effect does not happen in landscape mode.

Will apple allow upload of multiple photos?

I'm glad you're all so happy with it :). I'll get the multi-byte character stuff fixed in the next release, also, I did think about doing album-subalbum relationships this time but it needs some extra work that would have delayed the release. I'll get that done for next time too.

I'll have a look at that keyboard bug too; I haven't seen the option of multiple-selection from the photo selector yet. It hadn't crossed my mind though, so I could have missed it. If the picker supports it then I'll implement it, if not I'm afraid we're out of luck.

No payment is needed capehart, I fully intended people who already had the app to get the upgrade for free. This is the first release I'd consider of good enough quality to charge for and everyone else who suffered the previous releases deserves to have it for free :)

Matt

Daagaak: Will there be a Gallery 3 version? G3 seems getting closer and closer to a release so I thought I'll wait for that, rather then setting up a new G2 installation right now.

Hey AdrianB and emonty,

Once I get an Gallery3 installation going on my server I'll endeavor to support both in Gallery Upload. I don't have a huge amount of free time at the moment though, so I wouldn't expect it soon. I'll work on it.

Emonty, I'll check up on why it isn't appearing in the Netherlands app store. It was listed in the UK as of this morning, I'll check it out. Also, I can't promise to support video uploads anytime soon. I only have an iPhone 3G, not a 3GS, so it is pretty hard for me to add video support at the moment.

Regards,

Matt

3g-recorder, not come across it? Presumably lets you record video on your iPhone? Does it need jailbreaking though?

Heh, as touched as I am. I don't have a 3GS, nor have I jailbroken my 3G. If/when I get a new iPhone then I will make sure Gallery supports video. I can look at dry coding it though I dislike the idea of writing something I cannot fully test on a real device.

I'm using a 3Gs/3.1 and the EXIF info seems to be broken. The info is stripped during upload unless I check Auto-Rotate which (oddly) adds the colorspace field and nothing else. Also, is there a way to edit any IPTC fields beyond filename? I do not see an option for adding a caption. I'm really happy to see you developing this iphone app and think it will be great once these minor bugs are worked out. Feel free to PM me if you need a beta tester.

I have unfortunate news for you guys I'm afraid. Due to personal circumstances I am not planning to renew my iPhone developer certificate when it runs out this coming Monday. This means two things, firstly there will be no further updates to Gallery Upload (the chances of any bug fixes being approved within 3 days is zero to, well, zero) and secondly, Gallery Upload will be taken off the App Store as my certificate expires.

I had hoped expiry would not cause my app to disappear completely but alas it shall. This means you should try and make sure you have a backup of the latest copy before you ever delete it (if you want to be able to run it again).

There is a small glimmer of hope, if any of you are also budding iPhone developers then the source code to Gallery Upload is on github (http://github.com/daagaak/Gallery). If someone wants to fork it and continue developing it, just drop me a line by email (matt [at] sysctl [dot] co [dot] uk).

Regards,

Matt
