Reducing svn switch from 2.2.6 to 2.3 memory usage

When I try to "svn switch" from my working copy of 2.2.6 to 2.3, the command runs for a few minutes and the memory continues to grow until it reaches a point where my webhost kills the process due to high memory consumption. The exact command I am using is:

svn switch https://gallery.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gallery/branches/BRANCH_2_3/gallery2/

Are there any recommendations on how to get around this? Could I break the switch into multiple commands? The svn version I am using is 1.4.2.
