I am receiving the same error message as bluechil.
If I enter http:// in front of the /publice_html, will the error msgs go away so I can move past Step 4 and complete the configuration of Gallery?
Error: Directory /public_html/Gallery3/albums does not exist. Please create it.
Error: Directory /public_html/Gallery3/tmp does not exist. Please create it.
the photos and temp folders already exist. Gallery does not recognize them.
This is a reinstall by the web host due to database corruption.
Thanks,
M.

Hallo M,
With "directory" we do not mean an URL. So http:// is definitely wrong.
To me "/public_html/Gallery3/albums" looks like a part of the complete path.
Ask your hoster for the complete path.
I guess its something like "/usr/web/magic742/htdocs/public_html/Gallery3/albums" or similar.
By the way: Gallery 1.x does not use any database.
