Gallery just hijacked my website. When going to the gallery directory a upgrade dialog comes up. This happens to uses as well as administrators. NOT GOOD. |

Nope, that wasn't Gallery. Neither Gallery 1 or 2 upgrade themselves. You have to do that. Either someone else hacked your site or your host upgraded your Gallery for you.
The upgrade message you're talking about makes me think you are using Gallery 1 and upgraded Gallery. You need to click the link to upgrade the albums when upgrading to newer versions of Gallery 1 to make that message go away. But in my experience, that message is only shown to album owners when they are logged in, not just regular users.
