How to get thumbnails to open in new window.

I would like the thumbnails on my Wordpress pages to open gallery in a new window or tab. I have tried looking in the code, but I cannot make any sense of it.
I am willing to make this change on my own, but I need to know where to make the change. Can anyone help?
