Gallery installation fails at step 2

Gallery version: 2.3
PHP version:5.2.8
PHPInfo Link: The site is not publicly available yet
Webserver: Apache: 2.2.11
Database: MySql5.2.30
Activated toolkits (e.g. NetPbm, GD):
Operating system: Linux/Fudora 10
Browser: Firefox 3.0.6

I am having difficulty getting gallery installed on a localhost.
I have installed XAMPP for Linux 1.7 for all the required services. After passing the authentication step using the preinstaller and it says proceed to step 2 it loads a blank page:

http://localhost/gallery2/install/index.php?step=2&G2SETUPSID=478377650c906f56ee59ed3a842fa487

The string at the end does not match the authentication string in login.txt if its is supposed to?
