I was wondering if anyone has written up a good feaure comparison between gallery, coppermine, etc. It seems like the sort of thing a lot of people would like to see (and I'd guess any comparison would be heavily in Gallery's favor!)
I also used coppermine which is another good php product and I knew that the development team is reformed recently. Hope that more useful features can be implemented and inspired other competitors as well.

As a total newbie to this could someone explain to me what makes gallery better then coppermine?
I tried installing gallery on my site but it is running in safe mode. The hosting company suggested coppermine to me since it works in safe mode.
I am wondering what the benifits of gallery are so I can figure out if it is worth switching hosting companies.
Thank you for any information.

One reason Gallery requires safe mode to be off is so it can use Netpbm or ImageMagick. There is a built in graphics program in PHP, but apparently produces such bad thumbnail that Bharat decided it would be better to force installation of these packages than ever use it.
If you use coppermine in safe mode, you will need to use the PHP image processing, so you will be stuck with these thumbnails. Whether that is acceptable will be up to you.

Joan,
Coppermine can you imagemagick also, which is installed at my site. Is their a thumbnail problem with that also?
BTW the host may be moving me to a server that has safe mode off. They told me that they run ONE server this way.
I see a lot of people looking for FOTKI type features to be implimented in gallery. Just out of curiousity what type of program does fotki run? Propriety I would assume.
What are some of the other features that makes Gallery stand out above coppermine?
Thank you,
John

Hi John,
Apart from the comparison of php gallery package, recently I also compared some online gallery services provider including fotki.com. You may check the feature details here:
Most of these services providers are fee-based. It may provide another option of users who do not want to setup his own gallery but using hosting services.

Sorry, I haven't used most of these packages, so I don't really know the features. Hopefully someone who has used both can chime in.
What features do you want that they have at fotki? It's hard to know what is a good feature unless you have spent some time using a site.

Joan,
I am not sure what Fotki type features I would want. I have just been reading and keep seeing that people are asking for something like fotki.
I would like the ability to password protect albums, but I know that is not going to happen. Other then that I really like the way the album image(before you click into it) looks like a picture on top of a stack of photos.
I like the overall look of webshots better though, I like the clean "table" type look of the album listings. there.
BTW, my host moved me to another server, Gallery now works for me !!
Yippie.

I've never been able to get coppermin or e_gallery to install and run properly. I have a host now that iset up his servers specifically so that gallery will run and I am extremely pleased. He installed NetPBM and ImageMajik, safe mode is off and the servers are optimized for speed.
So I am sticking with Gallery and hope to post in using with other programs soon about a way to use it to share images and create thumbnails to use with oscommerce. I can't get the two programs totally integrated, but am using gallery to process the images and then I have 2 ways to display them.
But I rambled off topic. Gallery has so much to offer and the support is so good that it isn't worth my time to go look at the other packages any more, and believe me, I spent A LOT of time comparing packages before I settled on Gallery. And I cajoled and prodded former web hosting companies to be able to continue to use gallery. It is one of the reasons I finally settled on my current host.

loxly, thanks for the kind words! As a member of the support team I think it's great that someone takes the time to give us a little credit! Thanks on behalf of the whole Gallery team!

Your welcome. Believe me, I am not overabundent with praise, so your team truly deserves a lot of credit for a great product. Other products and other boards don't get to hear such glowing praise of their products any longer.
People are forgeting exactly how important service and support are, whether you are offering a free product or a paid one. Your support of your product will pay off in monetary dividends down the road I am sure. Support, having someone answer that burning question, (even though my questions have been few and far between!) is the key to ANY businesses success.
I hope things stabilize in my own situation enough that I can offer more help and support myself... I have great ideas for how to use gallery in some pretty unique ways, now finding the time to finish the darn projects.... that's the challenge!!!!

Last year I did a general comparison of feature using Gallery with other similar products.
