Knowing an album is hidden

There was a post about this in the Gallery 1.x forums, but I could not find something about this for G2. Here is what I'd like to do:

I would like to add a message to a theme's photo / album view page (specifically the Siriux theme) when the photo / album is hidden.

As the "hidden" module sets temporary view permissions for hidden elements, I cannot access its original permissions anymore (which would be the solution: "no public view permission => hidden"). What is the (elegant?) way to achieve this?
