Possible to add files in place?

Hi all, I have a file server where I store all my pictures. I just recently installed apache and gallery. Is it possible to add the pictures I have to the gallery without having them copied again to another location? Thanks. |

I've seen that link. From what I can tell it copies the files over to gallery and does not symlink. It says you should delete the files afterwards. Is it a hard link?

Have you actually tried it?
where's this feature?
add items -> from local server, select files and then select symlink. this is only available on linux/unix servers, not on windows.

Sorry, I never actually tried it because I read the documentation and it never mentioned anything about symlinks. It just talks about copying the files to gallery.
I've tried it now and see the symlink option. Thanks!

this is exactly what I want, in theory. but when I try to use this I get a copy as well as the original. what gives

I'm running on Ubuntu, trying to get access to the images on a WinXP Pro machine where they're all stored.
I've gotten as far as the "from local server". There's a link with the directory I created, and when I click it, it's filled into the selection box. I have a button that says "Find Files", but not a "select files" or "symlink".
When I created the directory, /home/<user>/Pictures/PictureLink, was I supposed to create it as a symbolic link to my server, or will gallery create the links for me?

OK, so it seems this isn't the appropriate way to go about it. Let me try again...
This topic seemed to be the answer to my issue, but may not be. My situation:
I've got an old box running Ubuntu with Gallery 2.3 installed and a very small hard drive. I've got all my photos stored on a WinXP Pro box. I'd like to be able to have Gallery find the images where they're currently stored, without having to make copies of them on the Ubuntu box. What would be your recommended solution?
If I mount the directory from the WinXP box to the Ubuntu box, would that then satisfy the "on the server" requirement to allow the above solution to work?

buy more hard drive space.
I don't know anything about mounting different filesystems/os/machines.

hmm, thought I answered this, but must've been running out the door at the time...
Yes, that should work so long as Linux see's that as a local directory. I don't know how file locks or performance will works across something like that.
So if you're able to mount it as something like /var/upload and then symlink to those files it should work. If not, then no it won't work
