Can someone please explain to a dummy (me) how to use the Server Add plug-in? I have it enabled, but every path I try returns this error: What gives? Clearly I'm not getting this. Thanks! |

Most likely an open_basedir restriction by your host. Post a link to phpinfo, this link explains how:

hmm, no open_basedir restriction. Make sure the directory has the permissions of 755 and make sure the path you are using is a system path like:
/home/YourUserName/photouploads/ or something like that, not http://www.example.com/gallery/uploads/

None of those are going to work. You need to specify the full system path, not a URL:
/home/YourUserName/photouploads/ or /home/YourUserName/domain/gallery/UploadedPic or something like that, not http://www.example.com/gallery/uploads/ or servername.dreamhost.com/.....

On a related issue (Gallery3 beta 2), I have a server based directory structure (several layers deep) and quite wide that contains a number of jpg files (no access restrictions). How can I specify a path that will search through all the layers for new pictures?

OK, I figured it out and it is SLOWLY entering about 20,000 jpg files that are about 1.5 to 3 mb each.

I had no problem getting Gallery3 RC2 to import the *structure* of my albums from the local server file system, but it did not actually import and *photos* from within the structure

You mean, it finished and you have all the albums but no photos? Or the photos are there and broken?

gallery3/var/logs/ contains only today's logfile (as this is a brand new attempt by me at gallery3), 2010-09-06.log.php, which contains only this:
<?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct script access.'); ?>
I note at the shell that echo $SYSPATH does show that SYSPATH is empty. Is there something I need to set up so that logging happens at all?
In any case, the symptom is that the import successfully completes and creates 82 *empty* albums - no photos in them at all.
This looks very much like the original poster's issue, relating to the preg_quote() call. I made the same hack as that posted, // commenting out that call to preg_quote(), and now Gallery3 RC2 is (slowly) importing the images as well as the directory structure.
What further information would you like to have from my webhost to help understand why some environments have this problem?

Any chance the server upload will have ability to do "symlinks" like in G2 (I have static photo albums, and it would be nice to avoid duplicating the images). Also, maybe I'm dense, but trying to figure out how to load a whole directory. For example, directory inside the base server upload enabled path, I click it, and it opens, but I can't seem to "select" the photos in there except by clicking them one at a time (gonna be NASTY for >17000 photos). Clicking just on "upload" directory doesn't pick up any of the photos...creates an "album", but no photos?
Also, any plans to allow MIME restrictions on what can be uploaded?

symlinks, no plans, it's a complex problem, iirc, it's been discussed, try searching.
for an entire directory click on the directory and click upload, an album of that name will be created and all photos will be imported
mime restrictions, no plans. since the only types that can be uploaded into G3 at this time are jpg, png, gif, flv, mp4 there probably isn't much of a reason to have such restrictions at this time.

Thanks. I did that, and it just created an empty album with the name "upload". Only clicking each file in the "upload" directory seemed to work. I'll try it again. I also notice that the maintenance->rebuild images doesn't seem to actually rebuild them when you change the image size setting...it just says they are all up to date. I'll post another place.

Jeff, what hosting company are you using?
I experienced that same problem with server import of a directory creating only the directory and not copying in the photos.
Someone else had earlier experienced it (see http://gallery.menalto.com/node/89982#comment-352845 ), and I had success using the same hack as that person did (commenting out the call to preg_quote() in the server import php module file).
Bharat has kindly offered to look at it, once I get my hosting company to offer a way to give the necessary access. If your problem turns out to be the same, and you can get bharat the needed access sooner, then perhaps that will speed up the resolution of the issue.

Hum...I'm using IX Webhosting. I'm using IE8, so was going to try Chrome and Firefox too, just to see if it made any difference. I'll report back when I've had a bit more time. I don't believe they grant SSH or any sort of telnet access (I've never been able to get it).
