Hi, the gallery experience I'm looking for is this:
1. The visitor reads a post (on a Wordpress-powered site), and sees it contains several thumbnail images within the post.
2. Visitor clicks on an image and up pops a new window (I know a lot of people block them, but bear with me)
3. The new popup widnow contains a large version of the thumbnail image, and a row of the other images in the post as thumbnails that link to other large versions.
This sort of gallery can be seen in action on the Gamespot.com site, but nobody seems to be able to tell me where it comes from, if such a thing exists for Wordpress or where I might find it.
Any suggestions? Thanks, me.

I've left your thread open in my browser for a long time now trying to find time to answer properly.
I've never integrated Gallery into WP, but I don't see why anything you're asking for isn't possible. Even if you need to use some 3rd party tools:

Actually the WPG2 integration contains a lytebox style popup with its G2Image chooser option.
Unfortunately I've seen a number of posters complaining WPG2 does not work properly with the latest WP.
But I'm not a WP user either.
